What We Expect From Our Coaches (And Why It Matters)

At CrossFit Jorvik, we believe great coaching goes far beyond simply leading a workout or counting reps, because while programming matters, people matter more, and we know that every person who walks through our doors arrives with a different story, different challenges, different confidence levels, and different goals. Some people are experienced in training, while others are walking into a gym for the first time in years, managing injuries, busy family lives, stress, or simply trying to build confidence again, which is why one of the biggest things we expect from our coaches is the ability to genuinely meet people where they are at.

For us, that means coaching without judgement, ego, or unrealistic expectations, understanding that progress looks different for everybody and recognising that success for one person may be lifting heavier weights, while for another it may simply be showing up consistently, moving without pain, building confidence, or creating healthier habits. We want our coaches to be approachable, supportive, and encouraging because fitness can already feel intimidating enough, and we believe people should leave sessions feeling better about themselves, more capable, and more confident than when they arrived.

This is also why we place so much importance on scaling exercises when needed, not because we want to make things easier, but because we want training to be appropriate, effective, and sustainable for the individual in front of us, whether that means adjusting movements, reducing load, working around injuries, or building someone up gradually over time. To us, scaling is simply good coaching, because the goal is never to force people into something they are not ready for, but instead to help them progress safely and confidently in a way that supports long-term success.

Above all, we expect our coaches to genuinely care, to remember names, notice when somebody has not been in, offer encouragement when confidence is low, and understand that real life happens, because coaching humans means recognising that people are balancing work, families, stress, setbacks, and challenges outside of the gym. We want CrossFit Jorvik to feel like a place where people are supported, guided, and genuinely cared for, because fitness should build people up, and great coaching makes all the difference.
