Training for Real Life
Training, not just to look good, but to give you the best life outside the gym

At Jorvik, we believe fitness should make your life better - not just make you better at the gym.
Of course, getting stronger, fitter and healthier matters. We love seeing people hit PBs, learn new skills and surprise themselves with what they’re capable of, but when you strip it all back, the real reason we train is much bigger than that. It’s so you can handle life.
It’s being able to help an unwell parent without your body giving up halfway through. Carrying shopping bags, helping someone up the stairs, or being physically and mentally resilient when life throws something difficult your way.
Our lovely member, Nikole, says getting fit and strong helps her mentally but also helps her care for her Mum who is unwell. It helps when she needs to lift or move her Mum, she can do this safely and confidently. Listen to Nikole's first hand experience in the link attached.
It’s also keeping up with the kids on a busy Saturday at the park, joining in rather than sitting on the sidelines, or having the energy to chase them around after a long week at work. It’s saying yes to the spontaneous stuff - the hike in the Yorkshire Dales with friends, the long dog walk, a city break where you’re walking 20,000 steps a day, or a summer adventure that turns into climbing over rocks, paddleboarding, carrying backpacks or just being active from morning to night.
Even in true Yorkshire fashion, when “summer” looks suspiciously like rain, wind and a waterproof jacket.
Fitness should give you confidence in your body. Confidence that you can say yes to more. Confidence that you can trust yourself physically. Confidence that life feels easier because you’re stronger, fitter and more capable.
We see it all the time in the gym. Members telling us that carrying luggage on holiday suddenly feels easy. That they don’t get out of breath running around after the kids anymore. That helping an ageing parent no longer feels physically overwhelming. That they enjoyed a long walk around York or a weekend hiking trip without feeling broken afterwards.
That’s the stuff that matters because the goal isn’t to be the fittest person in the room, the goal is to build a body and mind that lets you enjoy your life more.
So whether your version of “real life fitness” is keeping up with the family, feeling stronger as you get older, enjoying weekends outdoors, or simply having more energy to do the things you love - that’s exactly what we’re here for.
Train for life. The rest takes care of itself.
