What keeps people coming back here?
Results are great but there's another ingredient that gives us motivation

When most people think about joining a gym, their focus is usually on the end result. They want to lose weight, build strength, improve their fitness or simply feel healthier. Those are all brilliant reasons to start exercising, but they're rarely the reason people continue for years.
After coaching people in York for over a decade, we've learnt that long-term success has far less to do with motivation than most people think. The people who consistently turn up aren't always the ones with the biggest goals or the strongest willpower. More often than not, they're the people who genuinely enjoy the experience of coming to the gym.
That enjoyment doesn't come from every workout being easy. In fact, some of the sessions you'll remember most are the ones that pushed you further than you thought possible. The difference is that they're shared with people who encourage you through the tough moments, celebrate your wins and make you laugh before, during and after the workout. Suddenly, training becomes something you look forward to rather than another task to squeeze into an already busy week.
Life is demanding enough without exercise feeling like a punishment. Between work, family commitments, school runs and everything else that fills our diaries, finding time to train can already be a challenge. If every session feels like something you have to endure, it's only a matter of time before other priorities begin to take over.
That's why we believe the gym should be one of the best hours of your day. It should challenge you physically, leave you feeling accomplished and give you a chance to switch off from everything else that's going on. Sometimes that means celebrating a personal best, sometimes it means finally mastering a movement you've been working on for months, and sometimes it simply means sharing a laugh with the people around you after everyone has survived a particularly brutal workout.
Having fun doesn't mean the training isn't effective. If anything, it's quite the opposite. People are far more willing to push themselves when they're in an environment they enjoy. They work harder because they feel supported, they're more willing to try things they've never done before and they're much more likely to come back for the next session. Over time, that consistency is what produces the results everyone is looking for.
It's easy to spend hours searching for the perfect training programme or wondering whether you should be doing one style of exercise instead of another. While good programming certainly matters, it's worth remembering that the best programme in the world won't help if you don't stick to it. Consistency has always been the secret ingredient, and enjoyment is one of the biggest drivers of consistency.
One of the things we love most about coaching group classes is seeing how quickly strangers become training partners and, in many cases, genuine friends. People start recognising familiar faces, celebrating each other's achievements and checking in when someone hasn't been around for a while. That sense of community makes it much easier to stay committed because you're no longer turning up to a room full of strangers; you're joining people who are happy to see you.
Of course, everyone arrives with different goals. Some people are training for a marathon, others want to feel stronger carrying the shopping, keep up with their children at the park or simply have more energy at work. Whatever the reason, the journey is much easier when you actually enjoy the process instead of constantly waiting for the end result.
At CrossFit Jorvik, we take coaching seriously because helping people move well, train safely and achieve their goals is incredibly important to us. At the same time, we don't believe those things have to come at the expense of enjoying yourself. The best sessions are often the ones where everyone works incredibly hard, encourages each other through the final few reps and finishes with tired legs, a sense of achievement and a smile on their face.
Because if you can leave the gym feeling fitter, happier and already looking forward to coming back, you're far more likely to keep showing up. And in the long run, that's what really changes people's lives.
