Fitness Does Not Always Need a Finish Line

For many people, fitness begins with an event such as a holiday, wedding, race or competition, because having a clear target can provide motivation, structure and a reason to stay consistent. There is nothing wrong with this approach, and some people genuinely perform better when they have something specific to work towards.

The problem comes when exercise only happens in the lead-up to an event, followed by a period of stopping completely until the next deadline appears. This can create a frustrating cycle where you always feel as though you are starting again rather than building fitness that lasts. A healthier approach is to see exercise as part of your lifestyle, even when there is no particular event on the horizon. This does not mean training every day or making fitness the centre of your life; it simply means finding a routine that fits alongside work, family and other responsibilities.

Not every session needs to be intense, and not every week needs to be perfect. Some weeks you may train several times, while during busier periods you may only manage one session, but maintaining some level of consistency is often more valuable than repeatedly going all in and then stopping. It is also worth noticing the everyday benefits of fitness, such as having more energy, feeling stronger, moving with less discomfort, managing stress more effectively or finding it easier to keep up with your children. These improvements may not come with medals or dramatic before-and-after photographs, but they can make a significant difference to your quality of life.

Events and challenges can still be enjoyable and motivating, but ideally they should add direction to a fitness routine that already exists rather than being the only reason you exercise. Once the event is over, you can recover, adjust your training and continue moving without needing to immediately find another finish line. At CrossFit Jorvik, we help people build strength and fitness that supports real life, whether they are working towards a specific challenge or simply looking for a routine that feels enjoyable, manageable and sustainable.

Fitness should not only help you prepare for the next event; it should help you enjoy everything that happens in between.
