When the sun finally shows up in York, life naturally becomes a little more social. Weekends fill up with barbecues, days out, holidays, family gatherings and evenings spent in beer gardens making the most of the lighter nights. After months of cold weather, it's only natural to want to enjoy it.

Unfortunately, this is also the time of year when many people start feeling guilty about food. They worry that a meal out, a few drinks with friends or an ice cream on a warm afternoon will somehow undo all of their hard work. We often see people fall into the trap of thinking they're either "being good" or "being bad" with their nutrition, when the reality is far less dramatic.

The truth is that your health and fitness are built by what you do consistently over time, not by a single meal or a weekend of celebrations. A barbecue doesn't ruin your progress. A holiday doesn't erase months of training. What matters far more is your ability to enjoy those occasions and then return to your normal routine afterwards.

Having a positive relationship with food means understanding that food is about more than nutrition alone. That doesn't mean throwing healthy habits out of the window. Continue training, stay active, eat plenty of protein, fruit and vegetables, and drink enough water. Keep the basics in place most of the time and allow yourself the flexibility to enjoy the occasions that matter without guilt.

Fitness should give you more freedom, not less. If your approach to nutrition makes you anxious every time someone suggests going for a meal or meeting for a drink, it's worth remembering why you're doing this in the first place. The goal isn't to be perfect all summer. The goal is to build habits that allow you to enjoy everything summer in York has to offer while still making progress towards your health and fitness goals.
